The most reliable finding in performance marketing over the last decade is that creative is the largest controllable variable, larger than targeting, bidding or the landing page. That finding has been widely reported and narrowly acted upon.

Creative volume is a systems problem

If creative is the lever, the constraint is production throughput. Most teams can test targeting hypotheses weekly and creative hypotheses quarterly, which means they are running experiments on the variable that matters least at four times the frequency.

Fixing that is unglamorous: modular asset systems, a standing concept library, shoot days that produce forty usable assets rather than four hero pieces, and an approval process that does not route every variant past a legal review.

Let the data brief the creative

The best briefs we write now start with a paragraph of search query data and a paragraph of verbatim customer language from support tickets. Not because the audience should write the ad, but because the vocabulary they already use is the cheapest available shortcut to being understood.

Keep a taste veto

Pure optimisation produces a category where everything looks the same, because everything converged on the same local maximum. Reserve a share of budget, ten to twenty percent being a reasonable band, for work chosen on judgement rather than projected return. Some of it will be your next control.
