The uncomfortable version of the current situation: for a large class of informational queries, the click is gone. The answer appears above the results, sourced from pages that receive no visit. Pretending otherwise produces content strategies that optimise for a traffic number that will keep declining.
What actually changed
Not everything. Transactional and navigational intent still resolves to a click, because a summary cannot complete a purchase. What has been compressed is the middle of the funnel: the definitional and comparative queries that used to generate volume without generating revenue.
For a lot of businesses that is a smaller loss than the traffic chart suggests, because the traffic being lost was never converting. The strategic question is whether your content programme was quietly dependent on it.
Where the remaining advantage is
- Proprietary data. A summary can restate a definition; it cannot generate your benchmark study.
- Demonstrable expertise. Named authors with verifiable credentials, and content that shows working.
- Depth of experience. First-hand accounts, original photography, real numbers from real engagements.
- Being the cited source. Appearing inside the summary is now a brand placement worth measuring on its own terms.
Technical hygiene still compounds
None of this reduces the value of the fundamentals. Clean information architecture, fast server-rendered pages, thorough structured data and disciplined internal linking are how a machine reads you, and there are now more machines reading you than before, not fewer.
The winners will not be the sites with the most pages. They will be the sites with the most defensible ones.
